Key brake testing metrics

Braking distance
Measures the distance required to bring a vehicle to a stop with an accuracy of up to 2 cm. Precise braking distance data is essential for brake system validation, homologation, safety testing, and Euro 7 compliance. Read more

Vehicle speed
Provides highly accurate speed data throughout the entire braking maneuver using GNSS, Doppler velocity, and inertial sensor measurements. Reliable speed information is the foundation for repeatable brake performance evaluation and standards-compliant testing. Read more

Vehicle deceleration
Measures how quickly the vehicle slows down during braking and provides insight into overall braking performance. Deceleration data helps engineers assess brake efficiency, compare test runs, and validate vehicle safety systems. Mehr erfahren

MFDD (Mean Fully Developed Deceleration)
MFDD is an industry-standard metric that represents the average deceleration during the most effective phase of braking. It enables objective comparison of brake system performance and is widely used in regulatory and certification testing. Read more

Normalized braking distance
Normalizes braking distance results to a defined reference speed, allowing meaningful comparisons between different test conditions and vehicle configurations. This metric improves test repeatability and supports consistent brake performance validation. Read more

Pitch, roll and yaw angle
Pitch, Roll, and Yaw angles provide detailed information about vehicle orientation and dynamic behavior during braking and handling maneuvers. These measurements support vehicle dynamics analysis, stability evaluation, and highly accurate brake performance testing. Read more
Euro 7 compliance: Ready for new brake and tire regulations

Euro 7 introduces new requirements for brake particle emissions (PM10 and PM2.5) and tire abrasion emissions, making accurate and repeatable testing more important than ever. Manufacturers and test engineers must perform Euro 7 brake testing and tire abrasion testing under increasingly realistic conditions while ensuring reliable and repeatable results.
ADMA-Speed provides the precise vehicle motion, velocity, and positioning data needed for brake emission testing, tire wear validation, and other Euro 7 compliance testing procedures. By combining GNSS and inertial sensor data, ADMA-Speed enables accurate measurements even in demanding test scenarios.
Euro 7 challenges
Common brake testing measurement challenges
Reliable braking performance validation depends on accurate and repeatable measurement data. To
achieve this, several technical challenges must be addressed and effectively compensated throughout
the braking measurement process:
Lever arm effect
During a braking maneuver, vehicle dynamics cause different velocity profiles at different measurement points. As the vehicle pitches forward around its Center of Gravity (COG) under deceleration, the velocity at the Measurement Reference Point (MRP) can differ from the velocity at the vehicle’s center of mass. If left uncompensated, this lever arm effect can influence braking distance and deceleration measurements.
To ensure maximum accuracy and repeatability, the ADMA-Speed automatically compensates for these dynamic effects by calculating and outputting braking data at a configurable Point of Interest (POI). By positioning the POI at the vehicle’s Center of Gravity, the system delivers highly precise and consistent braking performance data, independent of sensor mounting location.
This approach improves measurement accuracy and provides a reliable basis for brake testing, vehicle dynamics analysis, and standards-compliant braking performance validation.

Rockback Effect

During braking, the vehicle pitch es forward under deceleration. Once the vehicle comes to a standstill, it gradually returns to its neutral position, resulting in the so-called rockback effect. This dynamic behavior can influence low-speed braking distance measurements and reduce measurement accuracy near zero velocity.
To ensure reliable and repeatable brake testing results, the lower velocity threshold should be set to 1 km/h or higher. This allows the braking maneuver to be evaluated before rockback effects occur, ensuring accurate and standards-compliant braking performance measurements.
GNSS Signal Instability
GNSS signal reception can occasionally be affected by environmental conditions such as signal blockage, multipath reflections, or temporary satellite outages. These effects can reduce the accuracy of braking distance measurements and vehicle positioning.
By combining GNSS positioning with advanced inertial measurement technology (IMU), the ADMA-Speed maintains highly accurate and reliable measurement data even during short GNSS interruptions. This sensor fusion approach compensates for temporary signal degradation and ensures consistent, repeatable, and standards-compliant results for brake testing, vehicle dynamics analysis, and braking performance validation.
